CHRISTINA ERIKA FORSGREN 26 Apr. 1820-21 Feb. 1906

Alice Mariah Forsgren Eliason Hatch - Christina Erika's grand niece - said of Erika: "Aunt Reeky we called her. She became Grandpa Davis' second wife. She was the kindest, sweetest old lady in the world." And so this portrait of her seems to testify. I regret that I neither have, no know of, any other existing photo of her. We know very little detail of her life, but such as I know I will post to this blog, hoping that other descendants will be able to contribute information and impressions that I don't currently have in the Forsgren Family Association archives.

Please be patient as I continue to add information to this blog. The blogs for her brothers John Erik and Peter Adolph have so far consumed more of my time. John Erik was more colorful; Peter Adolph was more prolific....and I have not had as much dialogue with Erika's descendants.... but that said, please enjoy what is available now and feel free to contact me and contribute!

FORMER BRIGHAM MAN DIES AT HOME IN AVON
Brigham City, Nov. 22 - George W. Davis, a former resident of this city, died suddenly this morning at his home in Avon, Cache county.
Mr. Davis was born here July 15, 1861, a son of William and Eureka Forsgren Davis. His father was one of Box Elder county's first settlers, having come to Bingham[sic] City in 1850. He married Eliza Roxy Watkins Nov. 11, 1885. She died a number of years later, and he married Vilate Cole Nuhn of Willard, Sept. 3, 1903. While residing here he held many prominent Church positions. He removed to Avon in 1893 and was a member of the high council of the Hyrum stake at the time of his death.
Surviving are his widow and number of children. Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 23 at noon, in the Avon ward chapel. The body will be brought to this city for interment in the city cemetery here.

MISSIONARY: New Zealand and Eastern States

BURIAL: Brigham City Cem: B-13-21-(Tr.4 - W. cent.)
George's first wife, Eliza Roxey Watkins, was born 5 Oct 1863, Brigham City, Utah - the daughter of William Lampard and Mary Almina Hammond Watkins.  (There is a family tree submission on Ancestry.com for them submitted by "erbat02".

CENSUS: 1870 Eliza is 6 yrs. old and is enumerated with Lewis and Susanna Johnson and their one month old daughter in Brigham City Utah

1880 Census of Brigham City, Box Elder. p. 35, ED 4
Watkins, William, head, md, age 53
Watkins, Mary A, wife, md, age 52
Watkins, Emma, age 21
Watkins, Joseph, age 19
Watkins, Eliz R., daur, age 16
Watkins, John, age 12
Watkins, Charles A, age 8

Eliza died at just 37 years of age, 7 May 1900.  She and George Wm. had no biological children together.  They adopted Marguerite Louise Neilson (born 6 Mar 1892, Brigham City-died 20 Jun 1982 in Roy Utah - married Wm. James Roberts) whose biological parents were Rasmus Neilsen and Inger Marie Olsen.  I have no further information about this adoption, nor do I have a photo of Eliza.  If any of the Roberts descendants have further biographical information it would be so welcome to receive!)

Eliza is buried in a different plot from George Wm.  She is in the Brigham City Cemetery C-18-4-2

[NOTE: I am not certain how or when I obtained this photo or even if this stone is still standing in the Cemetery]

George's 2nd "marriage" was to Olivia Jane Smith.  This information was totally new to me when I discovered an entry about it in the Church's website newFamilySearch in March 2010. I had never heard that Geo Wm had married or was sealed to a third wife!

Olivia is the daughter of Samuel Smith and Francis Ann Ingraham - a family that has several other Forsgren connections:  Samuel Smith and Sarah Jane Ingraham - sister to Francis Ann - had a daughter Francis Mary Smith who married Knud Elior "Eli" Forsgren - George Wm. Davis' cousin thru Peter Adolph Forsgren.  Also Samuel Smith's son Hyrum by yet another plural wife married George's cousin Sarah Alice Forsgren, daughter of John Erik Forsgren.

Olivia Jane Smith is shown in newFamilySearch as being sealed to George William Davis after her death and a child, John Bertram being born just a few months before she died. Who is this child? What relationship, if any, did he have to GW Davis???? He apparently has been sealed to Davis and Olivia Jane Smith.
NewFamilySearch shows her marrying a John Thomas Kelly on 3 or 7 Jan 1887 in Box Elder, Utah or Smithfield, Cache, Utah He died the 23 Mary 1909 in Pueblo, Colorado! He is shown marrying a Pearl Stredder in 1890 in Rockland, Idaho by whom he has several children.
Olivia has been sealed also to John Thomas Kelly
She is listed in the Utah Burials Index:
   Olivia Jane Kelly
   born 7/22/1865, born Brigham City
   death 9/7/1887
   Parents: Ingram, Francis Ann (Mother)
   Smith, Samuel (Father)
   Kelly, John Thomas (Spouse)
I also found her in findagrave.com under Olivia Jane Smith Kelly. The headstone photo shows her name listed on the side of her mother's marker without the Kelly, along with her siblings.
Entry shows birth Jul 22, 1865, Brigham City, Box Elder, Utah and death Sep 7, 1887, married John Thomas Kelly 3 Jan 1887, Smithfield, Cache, Utah
John Thomas Kelly born Sep 4 1861 Leominster Herefordshire, England
Died Mar. 21 1909 Roy, Weber Co. Utah
Plot B-16-23-17. Brigham City Cem. There is a photo of his headstone ; his second wife, Pearl is buried in Brigham City as well under her 2nd married name: Pearl Stredder Kelly Shanklin.

George William's 3rd marriage was three years after the death of Eliza - to Phebe Vilate Cole Nuhn
Vilate was born 16 Sept 1859 in Willard, Box Elder, Utah.  She married Christmann Georg Nuhn on 15 Oct 1888 in Willard.  Christmann was born in Prussia.  They had two children together:  George Christian Nuhn and Leslie Cole Nuhn.  I do not know if Vilate and Christmann divorced or whether she was a widow at the time of her marriage to George William Davis.   The newFamilySearch information on his death says merely "unknown, probably California."   As far as I know George and Vilate had no children together. (She was already 44 when she married him).  Vilate survived George William, passing away,10 Aug 1939 in Avon, Cache, Utah.

CENSUS: 1930 Census of Avon, Cache, Utah. ED 1 Household 23
Davis, Vilate C, head, age 70, widow, age 27 at first marriage born Utah, both parents born Missouri; owns her home
She is also buried in the Brigham City Cemetery:
